I've seen Caroline in a lot of situations by now.
I've seen her in the custody courtroom, standing her ground against Samuel's lawyers with the quiet ferocity of someone who has nothing left to lose and everything to fight for.
I've seen her with Rose, patient and careful in understanding her and taking care of her needs. I've seen her with Charlie at three in the morning when his anxiety spikes, sitting in the dark, rocking on his heels.
I've seen her in many situations.
But I've never seen her this angry before.
I think of the phrase mama bear and I understand it for the first time in my life — not as a metaphor, not as a figure of speech, but as a biological fact.
