(Caroline's POV) I pull out my phone and text Jason. Don't forget to lock the door. His response comes back immediately: Already on it. I climb into bed, pulling up the blanket. And watch out for any drink she gives you. If you get drugged and end up sleeping with her, I'm kicking you to the curb. No way! You can guard against a thief. But you can't guard against a scoundrel. What do I do if she climbs through my window? I laugh. Then you better pray she doesn't. I plug in my phone, set it on the nightstand, and turn off the light. The sheets are cold. The room is too quiet. I'm used to Jason's breathing beside me. His absence leaves me feeling cold and restless. This is temporary, I remind myself. A few days.
