(Helen's POV)
The family portrait annoys me every time I walk past it.
Four faces. Jason, Caroline, Charlie, Rose. Arranged in the easy, unconscious way of people who have forgotten to be self-conscious around each other. Jason's hand on Caroline's shoulder. Rose pressed against Caroline's side. Charlie slightly apart, in the way he always is, but angled toward Jason in a way that is unmistakably reliant.
It's a good photo. That's the most annoying thing about it.
It doesn't look performed. It doesn't look like a woman securing her position or a man doing something for appearances. It looks like a freaking family of four, and I hate it!
I've been looking at it every morning for four days now and every morning it tells me the same thing, which is that I am significantly further behind
