Sage “Why did you lie to me?” Eve asked, tears streaming down her face, voice trembling with raw hurt. She stood over the hospital bed, fists clenched at her sides. “How could you!” she yelled, stepping closer and pounding my chest with both hands, over and over. Each hit was weak, more pain than force, but it cut deeper than any claw. I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t defend myself. My face felt cold and bloodless, lips dry and cracked, and my eyes stinging hot and red.
