Night had fully settled over the palace by the time I made my decision.
I couldn’t stay in my room any longer. Every hour that passed felt like another hour Cedric spent alone in the cold, without food, without water, without knowing if Nora was okay. My father had made his position clear. The guards were loyal to him. There was no official way to reach the dungeon.
So I found an unofficial one.
I waited until the corridors were quiet, changed into dark clothes, and slipped down the old service stairs that led to the lower levels. The air grew colder with every step. My heart hammered so hard I was certain someone would hear it. When I finally reached the heavy iron door that led to the cells, I held my breath and listened.
Silence.
I pushed it open just enough to slip through.
