THE FIRST SHIFT
BETTY'S POV
The pain hit before I could take another breath.
My fingers dug into the dirt as something inside me twisted hard enough to make my back arch. I tried to scream, but the sound came out broken, swallowed by the sharp crack of bones shifting beneath my skin. My knees buckled, and I fell forward, catching myself with both hands before my face struck the ground.
“Betty!”
Alpha Alex’s voice came from somewhere behind me.
I couldn't answer. My body was no longer listening to me. Heat rushed through my veins, then cold followed it, and I felt my hands press into the earth as my fingers shortened and my nails stretched into claws. Every movement hurt.
