BETTY'S POV
Life became smaller after Mara replaced Lisa.
At first, I thought it was only because I was no longer allowed to go to the library, but after a few days, I realized it was more than that.
Lisa had never made me feel free. Nobody in the Pack House had that kind of power. Still, she had spoken to me. She had asked me questions, taken me to places when she could, and sometimes, when the guards weren't paying attention, she had treated me as though I was a person instead of something that needed to be watched.
Mara was nothing like her.
She followed me because she had been ordered to, and she made sure I understood that she considered the task beneath her. I saw it every time she looked at me, every time her mouth tightened when she had to walk beside me,
