Alex’s eyes darkened. He called out to Eloise, “Wait a minute!”
He caught up with her in two steps and shoved a small ball of paper into her hand. His voice was fierce. “I’ll give it to you, but I still don’t trust you!”
Without hesitation, Eloise unfolded the paper, revealing a small pill inside. She placed it on her tongue, letting it dissolve slowly. The bitter taste spread through her mouth, but she didn’t flinch. She kept walking. “I need more of that.”
