Imogen The iron gates of the Draven Palace groaned open like the jaws of a sleeping beast, swallowing our carriage whole. I leaned my forehead against the cool glass of the window, watching the jagged stone towers pierce the storm-heavy gray sky. Everything about the capital of the Ironfang Kingdom screamed power, permanence, and peril. It was a fortress built on blood and bone, the home of Alpha King Lucian Draven. And, as of three days ago, my mother’s new husband. “Stop frowning, Imogen,” my mother, Victoria, whispered. She reached across the plush velvet seats to pat my knee, her eyes shining with an anxious, fluttering excitement. “You look like you’re riding to your own execution.” “It certainly feels like it,” I muttered, pulling my gaze away from the imposing courtyard. “Mother, look at this place. Look at the guards. They aren’t just standing post; they’re waiting for a war.” “They are Lycans,” she said smoothly, straightening the silk lace at her wrists. “This is how they live. Lucian maintains order.” “Lucian,” I repeated, the name bitter on my tongue. “You say his name as if he’s a regular man you met at a town gala. He’s the King of the Northern Realms. He crushed the eastern rebellion by burning their territories to ash. They call him the Pale Reaper.” Victoria let out an exasperated sigh, smoothing her dark hair. “Wild rumors spread by defeated enemies. You’re twenty-four years old, Imogen, far too sensible to be swayed by exaggerated hearth-side tales.” “He has no mercy,” I pressed, leaning closer to her. “Every Alpha from here to the coast fears him. The marriage happened too fast, Mom. One month you’re visiting the royal city on business, and the next you’re marrying the most dangerous Lycan alive? I don’t trust him.” Victoria’s expression softened, her hand warm over mine. “I know it seems sudden to you. But Lucian has been nothing but gentle, honorable, and deeply protective of me. I am happier than I have been in years, Imogen. I know you love me and want to protect me, but I am asking you, begging you, to try. Give him a chance. I intend for this marriage to last, and I want my daughter by my side, not hiding away in fear.” I looked at the faint flush on her cheeks and the genuine hope in her eyes. My stomach churned, but the fiery urge to argue slowly died out. My mother had sacrificed so much for me over the years; if she wanted this chance at happiness, I couldn’t destroy it before it even began. “Fine,” I conceded softly. “For you. I’ll be polite.” “That’s all I ask,” she smiled, squeezing my hand as the carriage lurched to a final halt. A tall, solemn guard stepped forward to open the door. He wore heavy armor etched with the Draven crest—a raven tangled in iron vines. As he bowed to my mother, his eyes flicked to me. The moment I stepped down onto the cobblestones, I felt a heavy, oppressive tension hanging over the courtyard. It wasn't just my own anxiety; it was in the air. Servants moved with hushed, hurried footsteps. Guards stood at rigid attention, their eyes darting nervously toward the high arched entrance of the main keep. Whenever a guard mentioned the King’s name while directing the footmen with our luggage, their voices dropped an octave, laced with a raw, instinctive dread. See? I thought bitterly as a young maid practically trembled while curtsying to us. He isn't a man; he's a terrorizing force. We were escorted up a massive spiral staircase to our quarters. The interior of the palace was stunning yet suffocating—adorned with ancient tapestries, black marble floors, and roaring stone fireplaces that did little to cut through the chill. My room was grand, far larger than our home in the valley, but the heavy oak door felt more like a cell gate than an entryway. Two hours later, a servant knocked on my door to announce that dinner would be served in the lower hall, and the King would be attending. I stood before the full-length mirror, taking a deep, steadying breath. I wore a simple forest-green dress, my long dark hair pinned back. I didn't want to look like a threat, but I refused to look like prey. I mentally rehearsed a dozens polite greetings, arming myself with cold composure. When I arrived at the private dining room, Victoria was already seated near the head of a massive mahogany table lit by dozens of flickering candles. She gave me a reassuring nod as I took my seat across from an empty chair at the head of the table. “He was delayed in the war room,” Victoria explained softly, reaching for her water goblet. “A minor border dispute. He said he would be down shortly.” Before I could reply, the heavy double doors at the far end of the room swung open with a resounding thud. The air in the room shifted instantly. The temperature seemed to plummet, and the ambient hum of the palace dissolved into dead silence. My heart hammered against my ribs as I forced my posture straight, preparing to face a hulking, scarred monster of a man. Then, he stepped into the light. My breath hitched in my throat, my carefully constructed defense collapsing in an instant. Lucian Draven was not the grizzled, aging war-tyrant I had pictured in my mind. He was startlingly young, appearing no older than his early thirties and breathtakingly handsome in a sharp, lethal sort of way. He was tall and broad-shouldered, draped in a tailored charcoal suit that barely contained the raw, dangerous power radiating from his frame. His jaw was cleanly shaved, carved from pure granite, and his dark hair was brushed back, though a few stray strands fell over his forehead. But it was his eyes that froze the blood in my veins. They were a brilliant, piercing silver, unnatural and terrifyingly sharp. As he walked toward the table, those silver eyes locked onto mine. He didn't look at my mother. He didn't look at the servants bowing near the walls. He stared straight at me. The silence stretched, long and suffocating. Five seconds. Ten seconds. He didn't blink, his gaze burning through me, scanning my face as if searching for something hidden beneath my skin. An electric spark, a strange, uncomfortable static— prickled along my arms, making the fine hairs stand up. My pulse raced, not entirely out of fear, but from a sudden, overwhelming tension that filled the space between us. Neither of us spoke. Neither of us acknowledged the strange, heavy pull that suddenly tethered my lungs to his presence. Finally, Lucian broke the quiet. He shifted his gaze toward my mother, offering her a faint, polite smile that didn't reach his eyes, before pulling out the heavy leather chair directly across from me. He sat down with fluid, predatory grace, resting his large hands flat against the dark wood of the table. Slowly, his silver eyes rolled back to lock onto mine. “So,” Lucian said, his voice a low, velvet rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. “You’re the daughter who already decided she hates me.”
