Chapter 77-2

699 Words

Mayhem looks up from the open fridge. "I'll come –” He meets Jade’s eyes, and stops himself halfway through the sentence. “No,” Jade says shortly. "I've got her." Another silence stretches between them. “Okay." Mayhem smiles at men, but it’s definitely strained. "If you need anything, Zarabug, just shout.” "I will." The guest room door is already open and I stop in the doorway, taking in what is the most comforting sight ever: Fresh sheets. Extra blankets folded neatly across the end of the bed. A charger already plugged into the wall. The curtains half closed to soften the afternoon light. On the bedside table sits a wicker basket with a notebook, lip balm, hand cream, tissues, a thermometer, anti-nausea tablets, fluffy socks, and peppermint sweets. Jade watches my face carefully.
