Lainey POV I heard his key in the lock, and I didn't get up. The door opened. The porch light fell across the hall floor and across my bare feet. Travis stopped when he saw me on the stairs. "Lane. Why are you sitting in the dark?" "I didn't feel like turning anything on." He shut the door. He came closer, and I smelled it before he reached me. It was beer. It wasn't a lot. It was enough. "You ordered a Coke," I said. He let out a breath. "I had a beer after you left. I had two." "I noticed. I sat there and I was proud of you, for a Coke." My throat went tight. "Do you know how sad that is?" He didn't answer. He stood there with his keys in his hand. I had thought I would be angry. I had forty minutes to get ready for it. But it had all drained out of me somewhere on Main Street
