Amber. The night outside the hospital was dark, but the tall buildings around threw enough light to make everything glow in shades of gold and blue. I stood on the curb, arm raised, trying to flag down a taxi. This was the third one that had slowed, looked me over, then sped off with some excuse—too far, wrong direction, off-duty. My borrowed jeans pinched my thighs with every shift of weight, the top riding up again to show a sliver of stomach. I tugged it down for the hundredth time, heart hammering.
