Where the hell was I? Why couldn’t I catch my breath?
I felt this slow, creeping sensation furling within my bones. Something was chasing me, but I didn’t know what it was. All I knew was that I had to keep running.
I stumbled a handful of times and tried to keep my balance against one of the trees. My lungs were burning. The rabid sound of a large animal snarling echoed in the distance, as did a whole new sound.
It was muttering—like several voices were trying to speak over each other at once. I turned my head and felt my heart jump into my throat.
