The knocking started softly at first, like someone gently tapping. I groaned and pushed my face deeper into my pillow, hoping whoever it was would take the hint. I was tired, my ribs ached, and all I wanted was silence and a few hours of sleep. But the knock came again, louder this time, firm enough to pull another frustrated sound out of me.
“Go away… I said I want to be alone,” I muttered. I rubbed my eyes and sat up slowly, still half-asleep. My voice sounded tired even to my own ears. I waited, but no one answered.
