I'm having coffee Monday morning when my laptop pings. The sender is listed as "Chen Family Legal," and the subject line reads: "Notice of Challenge to Trust Distribution."
My hands shake as I open it.
Dear Ms. Chen,
This letter serves as formal notice that the Chen Family Trust is filing a legal challenge to the court's decision granting you early access to trust assets. We believe the ruling was made under duress and without full consideration of your mental state and susceptibility to outside influence.
A hearing has been scheduled for November 15th. We recommend you secure independent legal representation.
