The glint on the floor was small enough that I almost convinced myself it wasn’t what I thought it was.
I reached beneath the edge of the nightstand anyway.
The resin pendant slid across the hardwood beneath my fingers.
My chest tightened before I even picked it up.
“No.”
Nixx shifted closer behind me. “What?”
I sat back on my heels and stared at the little dandelion seed suspended inside the resin.

A crack ran through the center from one edge to the other, with smaller fractures spreading outward like a spiderweb. One side had been crushed badly enough that the smooth surface had caved inward. There was a dark smear across it that looked suspiciously like the heel of a boot had ground it against the floor.
