Nixx Hospitals had a way of making time feel personal. The clock above the waiting-room television insisted Benny had been in surgery for less than an hour, but I had already watched the minute hand move enough times to hate the f*****g thing. Every set of footsteps coming from the corridor pulled my attention away from the doors, and every nurse who walked past without looking toward us made the knot in my stomach tighten another turn. I had tried sitting. That lasted maybe five minutes before I found myself standing near the windows instead. Then I paced to the vending machines, came back, sat again, and repeated the whole pointless cycle. Across from me, JJ wasn’t doing much better. Millie had finally fallen asleep curled against her side beneath one of the thin hospital blankets
