The closer we got to the property, the less I liked any of it.
Nobody talked much during the drive. Jarek and Marcus rode in the first SUV with Bryce, while Stone, Smitty, Benny, and I followed behind. We had gone over the approach enough times at the farm-supply lot that there was nothing left to discuss unless something changed, and none of us were interested in filling the silence just because it was there.
Benny sat beside me with one knee bouncing every few seconds.
I knew him well enough to recognize what that meant. It wasn’t the property making him anxious. It wasn’t Bones or Razor or the possibility that we were walking into more Hell’s Fire members than we had counted.
It was me.
