By the time Benny and I were dressed, Marcus had already sent another update.
The vehicle was still at the car wash. The driver had not gone near the phone yet.
I pulled on my boots while Benny shoved his arms through his shirt, and JJ sat on the edge of the bed with the sheet wrapped around her. The humor from a few minutes earlier was gone, replaced by the sharp focus that came whenever something shifted from waiting to movement.
“You’re not grabbing whoever it is,” she said.
“No.”
Benny pointed at me as if I had passed a test. “Look at that.”
I ignored him and crossed back to JJ. “You stay here with Millie while we move. Jarek will keep you updated, and so will we.”
Her eyes narrowed for half a second, then eased. “That I can live with.”
I kissed her once, grabbed my phone
