When they called my name, Daddy Nixxy whistled so loudly that three people in front of me turned around.

I crossed the stage grinning. Daddy Benny yelled, “That’s our girl!” and I nearly laughed during the handshake. Mom had cried at my acceptance letter and the news of my trauma-nursing job here in Lubbock. She was probably crying now.
I had chosen trauma nursing because I knew what it felt like to wait for news about someone you loved. I wanted to be the nurse who could offer frightened families a steady voice, even on the hardest days.
