The guest room was already half dark when I sat on the edge of the bed and started working my boots off.
Millie had gone down in the master after two stories and one very serious negotiation about the rabbit’s sleeping position. JJ had stayed in there to make sure she actually stayed asleep.
That left me in the room that had started turning into ours, jeans unbuttoned, bandage still taped over my side, and a body that had officially decided patience was a joke.
The door opened.
Nixx stepped in quiet, the way he always did when a kid was sleeping down the hall. He toed out of his boots. Pulled his shirt over his head. Dropped it on the chair like this was just getting ready for bed.
