I had spent years being predictable for Havoc.
He needed me scared because scared meant quiet. Threaten Millie and I would fold. Push hard enough and I would choose whichever option he had already chosen for me.
Maybe that was finally useful.

Every man at Jarek’s table looked at me like those four words had personally offended them.
Marissa didn’t. Neither did the detective sitting beside her. Benny leaned back in his chair while Nixx went very still at my right.
Jarek folded his arms. “That sentence has history.”
“So does Havoc.” I set both hands on the table. “He still thinks he can make me react. Every time he contacts me, watches me, or gets close enough to remind me he exists, that’s what he’s doing. He wants me thinking about what he wants.”
