The detective made me repeat the rule twice before he let me get out of the car.
“If anything changes?”
“I leave.”
“If Harper contacts you with different instructions?”
“I don’t follow them.”
“And if somebody approaches you who isn’t Harper?”
“I follow the plan we already agreed on unless you tell me otherwise.”
“Good.” He watched me reach for the door handle before adding, “JJ, you can still change your mind.”
“I know.”
That mattered more than I expected it to.
