For several seconds, nobody spoke.
My head hurt enough that I knew I should stop thinking, stop asking questions, probably close my eyes and sleep like the doctor had told me. Instead, one memory surfaced with enough force to make my stomach turn.
“You said you’d find him.”
Nixx’s face tightened.
I stared at him. “At the shop. I gave you Roy’s number because you said you could find out who he was.”
“I remember.”
“You came back and told me it was a dead end.”
Benny shifted near the dresser but wisely said nothing.
A laugh escaped me, sharp enough to hurt my ribs. “Were you actually investigating yourself?”
“No.”
“Then what the hell were you doing?”
“Keeping the two parts of my life separate.”
“For who?”
He didn’t answer.
“For me?” I asked. “Because I’m the only person in
