Thirty minutes turned into forty.
I stayed in the hallway the whole time. Leaned against the wall with my arms crossed and looked at the door and didn't move. A nurse walked past twice and looked at me both times and didn't say anything. I didn't say anything either.
At the forty minute mark the doctor came out.
"You can come back in," he said.
I followed him into the room.
Mira was sitting up on the bed. Clean now. Someone had given her a warm cloth or something because the dirt on her face was gone. Her hands were still scratched but they'd been cleaned too. She looked at me when I walked in.
The doctor pulled the chair over and sat down. Looked at both of us.
