"Good," Troy said. "Less trouble." Nobody disagreed with that. I looked at the shed again. The lock was holding. The door wasn't moving. She was still out. Marc's phone vibrated. He looked at it. "Rook's five minutes out." I stopped pacing. We all kind of straightened up without anyone saying to. His truck came down the dirt track eight minutes later. He parked behind the van and got out. Looked around at all of us. Then looked at the shed. "She's in there?" he asked. "Yeah," Marc said. Rook walked to the shed. Checked the lock. Tried the door. Looked through the gap between the door and the frame. Then he turned around and for the first time since I'd met him he was actually smiling. "Good work," he said. "All of you." Wade held up his wrapped hand. "She bit me." "Worth it."
