My laptop sat open in front of me, but my attention hadn't been on the screen once since Dane walked out this morning. The same paragraph stayed on my screen while my thoughts remained somewhere else. I tried reading it again, but the words refused to stay in my head. Worry made every minute feel longer than the last.
A hard knock sounded against the door.
Before I could reach it, the door opened.
Mira hurried inside with Harlow right behind her.
Both of them looked shaken.
Mira's face was streaked with tears.
She wrapped her arms around herself as though she couldn't stop shaking. Harlow looked pale, but she stayed close beside her. Neither of them spoke right away.
My heart dropped.
"What happened?"
My voice barely sounded like my own.
