The call came from Axel at the gate.
I stepped away from the conversation I was having with Priest and answered it low enough that nobody nearby could hear.
"Two people outside," Axel said. "Older. Man and a woman. Asking for someone named Belle."
Everything in me went still.
Not surprised. I'd known they were still in town. I just hadn't known exactly when they were going to show up.
"Hold them at the gate," I said. "Don't let them in. Don't tell them anything. I'm coming."
I ended the call and put the phone in my pocket and looked across the yard.
The party was still going. Music. People. Kids. Everything exactly as it should be. Mira was near the food table talking to Tessa with her hand resting on her stomach the way it always did now.
She hadn't noticed anything.
