We got back to the compound in the early afternoon.
The morning had taken something out of both of us. Not in a bad way. Just the kind of tired that came after something that mattered. Ridge was quiet on the drive back and I didn't push him to talk. We'd said what we needed to say at the cemetery and left it there.
Ridge came around to my side before I could open the door. He looked at me for a second and I already knew what was coming.
"I can walk," I said.
"I know."
He picked me up anyway.
I put my arm around his neck and didn't argue. We were past that point.
Claire had food ready when we walked in. She looked up when Ridge carried me through the door and didn't say a word about it. Just nodded toward the couch like she'd been expecting exactly this.
