I woke up before Ridge.
Lay there for a few minutes in the dark listening to him breathe. He was still asleep. Finally. He'd been in and out all night, the same way he'd been the night before. I'd felt him get up twice. Heard him in the kitchen both times. The second time I almost got up too but I didn't. I just lay there in the dark and listened until he came back and the bed shifted and he lay down again.
Now it was just past two thirty and the compound was quiet and today was the day.
I got up carefully. Went to the bathroom. Stood under the shower for longer than I needed to. Let the water run hot. Thought about nothing specific. Just let my mind stay blank for a few minutes because once we left the compound there wouldn't be any more blank minutes for a while.
