The morning of the ultrasound dawned clear and cold, as if the sky itself knew it was a special day. I woke up before the sun, something that hadn't happened since Alice arrived at the ranch and I started sleeping like a normal man, without the ghosts visiting me every night. I lay there, in bed, watching her sleep. The gray light of dawn came through the window, painting her face in soft tones. Her belly, now big and round, rose and fell slowly with each breath. Two lives growing inside there. Two girls—we didn't know yet, but something inside me said they'd be girls. A silly hunch, unfounded, but strong. She stirred, a low groan. "Watching me sleep again?" Her voice was rough, eyes still closed. "No. I'm watching me watch you sleep. It's different." She opened one eye, suspicious.
