The absolute silence inside the dark bedroom was completely and utterly unbearable. It pressed down against my eardrums like a physical weight, making the steady, frantic thumping of my guilty heart sound incredibly loud in the empty space.
I stayed collapsed right there on the hard wooden floor for what felt like endless, agonizing hours, my trembling body curled tightly into a ball against the side of the large mattress.
