Seraphina’s POV
I couldn’t sleep.
No matter how soft the bed was… no matter how safe this place felt… my mind refused to rest.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw it again.
Kael’s face.
Cold. Distant.
The way he looked at me like I was nothing.
My chest tightened, and I turned onto my side, pulling the blanket closer around me.
“Stop thinking about him,” I whispered to myself.
But it wasn’t that easy.
It never would be.
A soft knock broke the silence.
Before I could respond, the door opened.
Rowan stepped in.
My breath caught instantly.
Even now, I wasn’t used to him.
To the way he filled the room without trying… to the quiet strength in his movements… to the intensity in his eyes.
“You’re awake,” he said.
I nodded, sitting up slowly. “I couldn’t sleep.”
His gaze lingered on me for a moment too long… like he was trying to read something beneath the surface.
Or maybe… feel it.
“I figured,” he said, stepping further inside.
The air shifted.
Warmer.
He stopped a few steps away from the bed.
Not too close.
But not far enough either.
“Are you in pain?” he asked.
I hesitated… then shook my head. “No.”
It was strange.
After everything that happened… I should have been hurting.
But I wasn’t.
At least… not physically.
His eyes softened slightly.
“Good.”
Silence fell again.
But this time… it wasn’t uncomfortable.
It was something else.
Something quiet… heavy… almost intimate.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
“For saving me.”
He didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, he studied me… his gaze steady, unreadable.
“You don’t need to thank me,” he said finally.
“I do,” I insisted, my voice barely above a whisper. “If you hadn’t come…”
I trailed off.
I didn’t need to finish it.
We both knew.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“I wasn’t going to let that happen,” he said.
The words were simple.
But the way he said them…
It made my heart skip.
Why?
Why did it sound like more than just a statement?
I looked down quickly, suddenly aware of how close he was.
Too close.
Close enough that I could feel his presence… his warmth… the steady rhythm of his breathing.
It was… overwhelming.
“You should rest,” he said quietly.
But he didn’t move.
Neither did I.
My fingers tightened slightly around the blanket as I slowly looked back up at him.
Our eyes met.
And this time…
Neither of us looked away.
Something passed between us.
Unspoken.
Unclear.
But undeniable.
My heart began to race.
Not from fear.
Not from pain.
But something softer.
Something dangerous in a completely different way.
Rowan’s gaze dropped briefly… to my lips.
Then back to my eyes.
The shift was subtle.
But I felt it.
And suddenly…
The air felt too thick to breathe.
“I…” I started, but my voice failed me.
What was I even going to say?
He took a slow step back.
Like he was forcing himself to.
“You’re safe here,” he said, his voice lower now. Rougher.
And just like that—
The moment broke.
He turned and walked toward the door.
But before leaving, he paused.
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore, Seraphina.”
Then he was gone.
I stared at the door long after it closed, my heart still racing.
Confused.
Overwhelmed.
And feeling something I wasn’t ready to name.
Because for the first time since everything fell apart…
Someone looked at me like I mattered.
