My manager suggested I bring a model to the charity auction.
He said it with the calm confidence of someone presenting a simple solution to a problem that did not exist. We were sitting inside the meeting room at the racing facility after training, reviewing the schedule for the next two weeks, when he placed the invitation in front of me and explained that the event would attract sponsors, journalists, actors, business owners, and several important people connected to the racing world. Attendance was expected, photographs were guaranteed, and according to him, arriving alone would make me look difficult.
“I always arrive alone,” I said.
