The call changed everything.
I had expected two more days.
Two more mornings with Sophie climbing into my bed before sunrise. Two more evenings listening to the twins argue over things that did not matter. Two more chances to teach Claire the details I had not written down.
Instead, the new family needed me the next morning.
Their current nanny had left suddenly because of a family emergency. The mother sounded apologetic on the phone, but there was urgency beneath every word. They had three children, important meetings, and no one else available.
I had already accepted the job.
Saying no now would make me unreliable before I even started.
Still, as I stood in the hallway with Luca watching me, part of me wanted to refuse.
Not because of him.
Because of the children.
