“No, nothing is going on between Landon and me,” I replied quickly. I’d already wasted a few seconds and I didn’t want him to confirm his suspicions.
I could hear Liam’s heavy breath through the other end of the line. After a beat, he continued. “Are you sure, Abby? Because nothing is making sense right now.”
My chest tightened as I continued to lie to him. “Yes, I’m sure,” I replied firmly, trying to sound convincing. “You know that we can’t be together because of the office rules.”
How could I lie to him so easily?
“Okay,” he replied with a wistful sigh. “I’m just overreacting for nothing. I’m sorry that I snapped at you.”
I swallowed. “It’s fine… I understand you. I’d also be upset if you were going on a business trip during valentines.”
