Mr Darrow stepped forward protectively. ‘Count, I’m afraid she is my charge –the daughter of an old family friend. She will not be joining this evening.’
Alice looked up at Mr Darrow. ‘Joining in what?’ she asked.
Mr Darrow waved his hand and placed it on her shoulder. ‘A small soiree that will occur after you are in bed.’
The Count continued to stare at Alice. ‘That’s a shame. Of all the guests you’ve hosted, she is by far the most beautiful.’
Alice looked at Mr Darrow. ‘What does he mean?’
