Alice tried to keep up with him as she looked around. The walls were adorned by art, and ornate carpets softly covered the floors. She wanted to ask him who he really was, and how he came by such luxury. She did not want to seem impertinent, though.
Finally, they reached a tall set of double doors. Inside was a canopy bed draped with rich white
linens. ‘This will be your room.’ Mr Darrow gestured.
Alice looked around. ‘It’s beautiful,’ she whispered, taking off her jacket. She twirled around to admire the vanity table, large shimmering mirror, and delicately floral wallpaper. She might as well have arrived in a palace.
Without any emotion, Mr Darrow spoke again. ‘Place your hands on the bed.’
‘What?’ asked Alice.
‘Place your hands on the bed,’ he repeated. ‘Now.’
