She nervously waited on hold for Niles to pick up. She’d never called him before, always letting him make contact first. This was per his instructions. It was ostensibly to make sure Riley didn’t hear a phone call or text message and ask who it was, but the no-call request extended even to his work phone. She’d often thought it was silly not to be able to call him at work, where Riley would never know, but she’d never risked his ire by doing it.
