“Push now,” Dr. Harris urged, her voice sharp, unflinching.
The words blurred in my head. Push now. As if it were that easy, as if my body wasn’t already split wide with pain so deep it made my soul want to crawl out of me. But there was no time for fear, no space for hesitation. The contraction seized me, a tidal wave of fire and pressure, and I bore down with everything I had.
I screamed. Or maybe I didn’t scream—it was some strangled, animal sound that clawed out of my throat. I felt Dalton’s groan echo in the room, Derrick’s ragged gasp right behind it. They were both bent over me, both gripping me, their strength braided into mine, their voices breaking with each wave.
