The second Mom walked through the door, my sister and I stopped talking.
It happened so naturally that I almost didn’t notice it. One second we were sitting at the kitchen table having probably the most honest conversation we’d had in years, and the next we were both looking down at her math worksheet like those fractions were suddenly the most important thing in the world. Mom hadn’t even said anything yet. She’d simply walked into the house, dropped her purse on the counter, and sighed as she kicked off her shoes.
That realization bothered me.
“Long day?” I asked.
“You have no idea.” Mom rubbed the side of her neck. “I swear, if I have to explain one more thing to people who should already know how to do their jobs, I’m going to lose my mind.”
