I woke slowly, like my mind was surfacing from warm water. The first thing I noticed was the river. It's a quiet rush. Its soft rhythm. Then the lantern light still glowed above me, dim from the morning sun trying to take over. And the grass beneath my blanket was cool and dew kissed. But the real thing that made my eyes open completely was the feeling of someone watching me. I blinked. Jack sat a few feet away, knees bent, arms resting casually on them. His eyes were warm. Focused. Not intense like during fights or danger. Soft. Quiet. A way he looked at me only when he thought I was asleep. My voice came out rough. “You watching me sleep.” He smiled a little. “Yes.” I groaned and covered my face with the blanket. “Creepy.” “Comforting,” he corrected. I peeked at him. “Debatable.”
