The room spun around me. I stared at Jack’s empty bed, my pulse pounding so hard I could hear blood rushing in my ears. The sheets were still crumpled. The monitor wires hung uselessly over the edge. The faint imprint of his weight remained in the mattress. But he was gone. Gone. My breath faltered. “Where is he.” Beau stood frozen beside the table, his chest rising and falling in sharp, uneven bursts. His hands curled into fists so tight his knuckles turned white.
