I had to refrain from chuckling when Scarlett’s clear and crisp voice commanded a calmness yet a clear demand, after announcing that she was a demi-goddess and seeing the shift in their expressions. She already knew this was going to go one of two ways, and it was clear which way it was going. I was utterly surprised she could understand their language, though I rarely show my surprise anymore. Scarlett has had a way of surprising both Damien and me, the whole time we have known her. First it was her strength, then her bravery, then her grace, her love, her devotion, her intelligence. Now it seems to always be her powers that surprise us. There is not a single thing that doesn’t surprise us about her anymore. It is one of the things we love most about her.
