I guess life hasn’t stopped playing these games with my life.
Because right now, I’m standing in the middle of a crowded ballroom, staring at my second chance mate who was just introduced as the Alpha King, while right in front of me happens to be my ex-mate who rejected me, killed my family, and broke my soul ten years ago.
I always knew this day would come. l had different ideas of how I would react and how I would feel when I finally saw Ezra again.
I thought I would be ready. But because of everything that happened today, meeting my second-chance mate and seeing my past stand right in front of me, it just feels like a lot.
I feel like I’m coming face to face with my past, my future, and my present all at once, and it’s just all mixing together.
My heart was screaming, and a part of me felt like the broken eighteen-year-old girl who bled in those cold woods.
The memories of my father’s death, my mother’s dead body on the floor, and my lost baby tried to rush back into my mind like a flood.
But I refuse to give Ezra a reaction. I refuse to let him see a crack in my armor.
I stood up straight, lifted my chin and let my Alpha power roll off my shoulders.
I gave him a slow, condescending smile, the kind of smile you give to a dirty bug standing in your way. Over the last ten years, I’ve learned how to control my emotions, my features, and what people see on my face. So I gave him my coldest, most arrogant face.
"I’m sorry, are you talking to me?" I asked, looking him up and down like he was complete garbage.
His jaw dropped. The smug, arrogant look he usually wore fell and he stared at my me like he couldn't recognize me, I don't blame him either because I don't recognize myself as well.
"Maya, you're-- you're he--here"
I let out a mocking laugh, crossing my arms over my chest.
"I’m sorry, do I know you?" I asked yet again, taking a step closer just to watch him flinch. "I think you should work on that stutter. But allow me to re-introduce myself. I’m Alpha Maya, and this right here is my Beta Terence. So please, do put respect to that name."
Whispers started breaking out like wildfire across the room.
"Alpha Maya?" a nearby Luna whispered in shock. "The Cold Alpha of Silver-Falls is her?"
Hope, who was still clinging to Ezra’s arm, turned bright red with jealousy.
"Alpha Maya?" Hope snickered, trying to sound brave, though her voice shook slightly. "Don't make me laugh. You're just a weak, pathetic runt who got kicked out of our pack. You're nothing but a fake, playing dress-up in a expensive dress"
I slowly turned my eyes to Hope, looking at her with cold pity.
"And you must be the Luna" I said, my voice dripping with cruel sarcasm. "Ten years later, and you're still clinging to my leftovers like a hungry dog looking for scraps. Tell me, Hope, does it hurt knowing that even after ten years, you're still just a consolation prize? You had to take the trash I threw away just to feel important."
She gasped and several females in the crowd covered their mouths to hide their chuckles.
"You little b***h" She spat, raising her hand as if she wanted to slap me.
Before her hand could even move an inch, I unleashed a bit of my wolf and she let out a weak gasp, stumbling backwards into Ezra to keep herself from hitting the floor.
"Know your place, lower-rank," I growled, my eyes flashing a dangerous, icy silver. "You are speaking to an Alpha. If you lift a hand against me again, I will rip it off"
Inside my chest, my heart was aching. The memories were killing, and the sight of them brought back every drop of pain I buried but on the outside, I was untouchable.
Ezra’s eyes flashed with anger but he doesn't scare me.
"You don't talk to my Luna like that, Maya" he growled, stepping forward.
"You still belong to my territory! You are my--"
"Touch her, and I will rip your arm from your body."
A voice as loud and terrifying as thunder roared through the hall.
The air in the ballroom instantly turned freezing cold. A crushing pressure exploded across the room, so heavy and dominant that every single Alpha, Beta, and warrior in the house instinctively bowed their heads in terror.
Before Ezra's hand could even get within an inches of my skin, a massive, powerful figure stepped between us.
He grabbed Ezra's wrist and twisted
A sickening sound of crushing bone echoed clearly through the silent room as Alexander squeezed.
Ezra screamed in agony, dropping to his knees on the floor.
Hope let out a terrified shriek, scrambling backward on the floor terrified.
Alexander stood over Ezra like an angry god. His broad chest rose and fell, his sharp jaw locked tight, and his piercing blue eyes were glowing a terrifying, fiery gold.
The raw energy rolling off him was so suffocating that no one in the room dared to even breathe.
"Your Majesty please" Ezra choked out, crying in pain from his knees, trying desperately to pull his crushed wrist back.
"She's-- she was my--"
"I don't care who she was to you," King Alexander growled, his voice deep and dangerous.. He leaned down close to Ezra's pale face, his grip tightening until Ezra whimpered. "She is Alpha Maya of Silver-Falls. And more importantly, she is mine."
The entire ballroom gasped in collective shock.
"If you ever raise your voice to her again"
Alexander whispered. "if you ever step into her space, or if your filthy hands ever reach for her again, I will personally slaughter your entire bloodline and burn your pack to the ground. Do you understand me, alpha?"
"Yes Yes, Your Majesty I'm sorry" Ezra said bowing his head to the floor in humiliation in front of all the Alphas.
Hr shoved Ezra away like a piece of dirty trash. then turned around and his eyes locked on mine.
