“Drake.”
“What?”
“You could’ve been hurt.”
I stared at him for several seconds before realization dawned.
The irony nearly killed me.
“Captain.”
His eye twitched.
“You’re literally upset because somebody protected you.”
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
Then opened again.
Nothing came out.
I pointed at him.
“See? That’s exactly the problem.”
His eyes narrowed.
“What problem?”
“The one where you think you’re the only person allowed to get hurt.”
Before he could answer, another wolf charged us.
That ended the conversation.
For now.
The next several minutes blurred together into movement, claws, shouting, and shifting bodies. The settlement was collapsing faster than I’d expected. Defensive positions were falling. Resistance was breaking apart. More and more Purists
