The word entered my mind the instant my hand settled beneath my daughter’s head, so clear that for one impossible moment I thought Nevara had spoken.
Then Nevara inhaled sharply beneath me.
Across the bed, the physician stopped checking the monitor. One of the midwives froze with a folded blanket in her hands, while the other slowly lifted her head from the tray she had been organizing.
Natalie pressed a hand against her mouth.
I looked down at the tiny girl resting against Nevara’s chest.
“You heard her,” Nevara whispered.
“Yes.”
Her eyes immediately filled with tears. “You can hear her now.”
“So can I,” Natalie said.
My attention snapped toward her.
The physician stared at our daughter with an expression I had never seen from him before. “I heard it as well.”
