Arianna had just announced she intended to take her father’s empire apart from the inside, and somehow Louie was still the first person to speak.
“Well,” he said slowly, staring at her across the hood of the SUV, “that escalated.”
Braxton gave him a look.
“What?”
Louie lifted both hands.
“I’m just saying five minutes ago we were discussing copies and encrypted files. Now she’s overthrowing a government.”
“It isn’t a government,” Arianna muttered.
Mara, who had joined us through speakerphone while Braxton updated the pack, answered immediately.
“It practically is.”
Arianna closed her eyes.
I almost smiled.
Almost.
Because underneath the sarcasm and the exhaustion, I could feel what she was really carrying.
Fear.
Not of her father anymore.
Of becoming him.
