I straightened up, a flash of anger in my eyes. “Sherry. What do you want?”
There was a brief pause before she spoke, her tone laced with condescension. “I’m helping you, because clearly you need to get your priorities straight. You’re just a little play thing to the golden twins and now you’re screwing up their future.”
My lips tightened. “Excuse me? They’re top athletes, and they’re capable of handling themselves. I’m not in the business of holding them back.”
Sherry’s laugh was sharp. “Oh, come on, Maria. Don’t be naive. You know exactly what I mean. You’re more of a distraction than a support. If you cling to them, you’ll have my father pulling every string to derail their careers. Mark my words—they’ll never get a shot in the NBA if you keep playing house.”
