(Reese) Kane pulled up outside my building at just after seven. I sat in the car for a second before getting out. Not because I wasn't ready. Just because it had been long enough that the building looked slightly different from how I remembered it, the way familiar things did when you'd been away from them longer than you planned. Same building. Same door. Same street. I got out. Kane walked me up and did a sweep of the apartment without being asked, the way he always did, methodical and quiet. When he was done he looked at me from the doorway. "All clear," he said. "Thank you," I said. He nodded once. "I'll be outside." He pulled the door closed behind him and I stood in the middle of my apartment and looked at it. It was exactly how I'd left it. Nothing moved. Nothing missing.
